Pollination
How does pollination happen?
When pollen grains from the male part of one flower (anther) are transferred to the female part (stigma) of another flower. Once pollination occurs, the fertilized flowers produce seeds, which enable the associated plant to reproduce and/or form fruit.
Is pollination important?
With out pollinators the worlds flowers, fruits, even coffee and chocolate would not exist.
Worldwide, over half the fats and oils the everyone uses comes from crops pollinated by animals.
Its estimated that more than 1, 300 types of plants that are growing around the world are for food, beverages, medicines, spices and even fabric.
More then 1 of every 3 bites of food and beverages we drink are available because of pollination.

What we can do to preserve pollination
- Grow a variety of bee-friendly flowers that bloom from spring through fall.
- Protect and provide bee nests and caterpillar host plants.
- Avoid using pesticides, especially insecticides.
- The most important thing is getting the word out and letting neighbors know what they can do to help.
