Hair and Nail Disorders
The normal hair cycle begins with Anagen,it is the active growth stage of hair. Catagen comes next, it is when the hair stops growing but the hair is not shed. Most likely what happens in this stage is the follicle being reabsorbed. Then it's Telegen. This is the resting stage. The hair falls not because it's unhealthy but because it's preparing for the development of a new hair. The last stage is where the cycle actually began. The old hair has shed and a new follicle has formed.
Four Common Hair Disorders
Seborrheic Dermatitis - A common skin condition that mainly effects the scalp. It causes scaly patches, red skin and stubborn dandruff. Not only does it effect the scalp but can also effect oily areas of the body such as the face, upper chest, and back. Seborrheic Dermatitis isn't threatening to your health but can be uncomfortable and cause embarrassment. It is also known as a long term condition, can be cured with repeated treatments and you have a high chance of getting it again.
Physiologic Alopecia - This is the result of normal hair loss, not caused by illness, medication or stress. This type of hair loss can be seen in babies just after they are born, women during pregnancy and teenagers. Telogen Effluvium - It appears as a diffuse thinning of the hair on the scalp. This happens when some stress causes hair roots to permanently stay in the resting stage. And what causes that are high fevers, childbirth, severe infections, severe chronic illness, psychological stress, major surgery, poor diet, and strong medication. Alopecia Areata - It is an autoimmune disease in other words it's when the immune system attacks the body. This causes the hair to fall out, often in clumps the size and shape of a quarter. It doesn't effect the whole scalp but just in some spots. Rarely it effects the whole scalp including the rest of the body. Alopecia Areata is an unpredictable disease and every case is different. |
